Clone Stamp Tool

We were learning a tool to help us airbrush our magazine front covers as this is done on almost every magazine front cover. This tool can be used to hide away blemishes and other imperfections on the face. We used the tool to update an old photo by getting rid of the scratches on the image. This is the first time i've ever used this tool and took a while to get used to the clicking and having to re click before i cover up part of the image with a wrong part of the image. Here is my before and after shots:

Text Effects

I want to use 3d text on my film poster and i was just playing about with the 3d text tool to get used to it, i tried to make a reto text that you may see on an album advert. I think it come out all enough for a first attempt.

Text Effects

I am choosing a thriller genre and have been looking at various texts affects to put on. This text affect is a little bit sci fi but i believe the actual effect may be useful in my product pieces.

Film Poster Analysis

'Hot Fuzz' is a hybrid genre of action and comedy. I am analysing this trailer as I'm still undecided in what genre of film to produce, it will either be action or thriller, however both genres are sometimes mixed together. I am analysing the codes and conventions of the poster. As previously said codes are any visual aspects that create meaning i.e. fonts, colours and images. Conventions are what you would expect to see or find in that specific media product.

The conventions of this film poster are:
  1. Film Title - this is to inform the audience of the name so they know what to look for in the cinema and talk about with other people.
  2. Tag Line - generally there is a tag line which brings all of the individual parts of the trailer together.
  3. Release Date - to let audience known when it is in the cinema, without it the poster would be pretty pointless.
  4. Actors Names - this is attract a particular audience and also promote the film and fans of the actors may google what films they are in.
  5. Main Image - used to suggest the narrative of the film (which is also done by the tag line) it also suggests the genre to the audience, generally has the characters in it. The main image is trying to be intriguing and captivating, the actors are used to promote.
  6. Producers/Directors Names - to let the audience know the genre and also if the audience recognise the brand they will associate it with other films that company has made attracting a particular audience i.e. if they see Paramount they know the film is a high quality film.
Usually there will be a film certificate so the audience know the age allowed to see it, however on this poster there isn't which is unusual and i can not think of why. The film certificate is usually a good thing on a horror poster, as the higher the certificate the more gory the film which will please the target audience.

The Codes of the film poster analysed:
  • Fonts - the fonts are san serif fonts, they are big and bold which makes them stand out. It represents an action genre. The font has a texture on it of metal, this is to represent the police badge which tells the audience that the film is about police, an action film.
  • Colours - the colours are dark, mainly white, black and grey apart from the colour on glasses. These colours are the colours of a police mans uniform, dark colours are usually associated with horror as action usually has reds and oranges (explosions) however this poster is representing an action/police film so these colours are correct for the genre.
  • Images - they're dressed in police uniform and have aviator glasses on which are stereotypically known with top gun an action film. They also have a tooth pick in they're mouths which is known will action films too. The actors are known as comedic actors so the 'serious' poses they are pulling are stereotypical of an action film but as the actors are well known for being silly it makes the audience laugh. The image perfectly represents the hybrid genre that the film is, action/comedy.

Trailer Shots

'Obsessed' was released in April 2009. It is a thriller film which is the genre i wish to follow, i may produce a hybrid genre of thriller/horror but usually the trailers and films have similar shots and editing anyway just one has less than the other.

I watched this trailer taking note of the camera shots i picked out around 50 shots a lot of them similar and i noticed that mid shots where used a lot as these establish characters and create more drama. There was quicker editing towards the end, around the last 30 seconds of the trailer as the climax of the film is an action part, a fight between Beyonce (Sharon) and Ali Larter (Lisa). Also a lot of the shots are cut shots or extreme close ups of certain parts, usually of Ali Larter (Lisa) as they are trying to create enigma and drama and also to show her personality which is crazy.

Here is a list in order of the shots i noticed. I grouped some of them together as there are a lot of mid shots one after another.

  • Wide Shot - of the city (establishes the surroundings)
  • Two Shots - establishes two characters
  • mid shots of individual characters - better view of them
  • Cue card of text - (this appears throughout however i have not entered them in  my shot list later on)
  • P.O.V shot of computer screen
  • Close ups of characters
  • Cut in (Extreme Close up) of Lisa's skirt and leg
  • Close up of facial expressions
  • Extreme close up of their bodies - ( a few of theses in a row)
  • Wide shot (establishing shot) of family house
  • Close up of shot of new character
  • mid shot of the two characters - establishes their relationship
  • Wide shot of bed and two characters
  • cut shot to Lisa
  • close up of family photo
  • Wide shot of all three characters - brings them together for first time
  • Wide shot of just wife and husband - shows reactions
  • Two Shot
  • P.O.V shot of computer
  • Mid shot of wife and husband
  • Close up- character is slightly off shot of centre to focus attention onto his hand gesture
  • Two Shot
  • Wide shot of car, establishes new scene
  • O.S.S
  • close up of reaction - anger (audience know film is going to get nastier)
  • Lots of close ups and cut ins
  • Mid Shots
  • Close up of Lisa on hospital bed
  • Wide shot - shot reverse shot
  • Two shot
  • Close up of Lisa
  • Mid Shots
  • Cut shot of back of dress
  • Birds Eye
  • Cut shot of hand
  • O.S.S
  • Close up of smashing window
  • Mid Shot
  • Cut shot of dress
  • Long shot of Sharon
  • Wide shot, O.S.S
  • Long shot
  • O.S.S
  • Close up
  • O.S.S
  • Mid Shot
  • Low angle shot (wide shot)
  • Wide Shots
  • Long Shot
  • Mid Shot
The cuts at the end get a lot quicker and show a lot of action and fight scenes, some of the shots change as it is the first time we see a low angle shot and long shots this is to change the atmosphere of the trailer and bring the genre clearly into the audiences mind.
I have taken the different shots into account and hopefully this will come across in my trailer.

Photoshop Tutorial

We had a tutorial in our lesson today on how to produce text that looks like ice. This was to get us used to making texts look different for our film posters. This was attempt at it, i tried to make it look more like snow with melts dripping down it. I'm quite pleased :)
